As a resident of downtown Los Angeles, I’m no stranger to haggling and the cultures that influence it. Older Hispanic gentlemen will come in with their kids, carefully pick something out, try to get the price reduced, and when I won’t budge they’ll graciously purchase it anyway. The younger generation will just walk out. Koreans treat haggling the same way a rapist would operate; if it doesn’t succeed, you have to keep trying harder, repeatedly. The final attempt is always something along the lines of “I pay cash, you take off tax?”

Don’t even try this, please. I already have one letter from the IRS I haven’t had the balls to open yet, and that’s scary enough to encourage me to not break the law.

The oddest attempts at negotiating, however, recent came from a couple of cornfed white boys. They stood there near the PS2 case, waiting for me to walk past. They didn’t want to speak directly to me, they just stood there and stared at the wall until they sensed I was near.

“I GUESS WE’LL JUST HAVE TO KEEP LOOKING AROUND UNTIL WE FIND FATAL FRAME 2 FOR CHEAPER!” he exclaimed in a voice that might not have been, but almost certainly was, intended as some kind of play acting for my benefit. He then turned and stared straight at me, saying nothing further.

“Okay.” I finally said.

A long moment passed, then the man turned to look away from me so it was obvious that he couldn’t possibly be speaking to me. “THIS IS RIDICULOUS.”

Another long pause. More staring. Then they left. I didn’t feel it worth mentioning that I pay a pretty penny to bring in Fatal Frames 2 and 3 brand new.

Radical restructuring at the store! We’re contemplating removing the ceiling tiles and starting in on that steampunk theme Emil and I came up with last year. On the promotions side, those of you in the downtown Los Angeles area can look forward to a 10% discount when you pre-order with us. We’ll probably introduce the same deal to the webstore… when I finish the damn thing in the year 2014. Hey, I’m the only one updating the thing, so you get what you pay for.

I need a softer light on this mural. The filament bulb we use was made in the 70s, I think. Either way, it really makes the glossy sheen on the cloud impossible to see.
Also, I need something better than a PSP camera, obviously. I am poor. Buy something.

Almost finished…

Mario is such a dick.

I shouldn't want to be able to fuck my own wall.

Just wanted to point out, virtually without warning, that our first dicktastic attempt at a podcast will be recorded tomorrow night.

Some of you may remember that we were attempting some pretty bold art direction with our physical shop. We finally got a new artist who didn’t have his legalized pot and could thus do more than five minutes of work before complaining of his arthritis and using our bathroom to smoke something bought from an asshole who calls himself Chef Wolfie.

Here’s what we did today. First up, the floor, glowing under the blacklight fixtures.

Hard to see with the PSP camera seemingly deteriorating in quality. We’ll get a friend with a better camera and too much spare time to take some better pictures.

But also… the wall!

Pencils, then inked outlines, acrylic base, and finally some fluorescent paint to make the details glow. That’s the plan, at least.

This is all the acrylic we cared to apply because some jerk named Vance forgot to buy the fine brushes. Also note that the original plan was to have Ken aiming more toward the background for a 3D effect, which didn’t happen. We need to fix his hair so it looks like Mai isn’t fighting a really buff Shaggy.

I appreciate the fact that Zekie’s art style looks more like Don Bluth than animu clone #5,103,749,026. I shouldn’t want to be able to fuck my own wall.

Oh yeah. We started getting arcade cabinets. Still waiting on Marvel vs Capcom 2.

The cabinet on the left contains a pretty bootleg 100 SNK titles, inclusing some “plus” variant repeats, and the Third Strike machine on the right gives two credits per quarter on the left slot… to be fixed next week, but right now we’re calling it a promotion.

The Headache MegaStorm Engine 3000, or Nintendo Virtual Boy, or Crap for short, is the only reason the detention center at Guantanamo Bay can meet its lawfully required leisure quota. Here you see Jackie enjoying it for the three minutes before she started screaming “Oh god, I hate my eyes!” over and over and tearing chunks of her scalp out. I’m only making the very last part up, mind you.

Hot, sexy pictures of the old Commodore 128s and Apple IIes to follow.

A customer who bought a Retro Duo a few weeks ago came in looking for some NES games and some new controllers, since he felt the RD’s packed-in gamepads were too stiff, which is a fair assessment. I stock some brand new SNES clone controllers, so he asked how those were. I didn’t rightly know, but I’ve sold a fair share and had no complaints, so I pulled one out of the box to let him be the judge.

From now on, I need to check on this kind of crap. While he was generally happy with the controller and the reduced price I offered upon seeing it, I prefer to stock top-level stuff. So I’ve pushed the price of these things down to $5.99 to get rid of them.

What you need to know: These controllers work pretty well, but they’re pretty cheaply made. They look cheaply made. They feel cheaply made. The d-pad is a bit stiff and the buttons are loose. I’ll look for a better alternative, but these “AVA” controllers are here if you’re looking for a cheap, potentially disposable SNES gamepad.

You can find it here.

While I’m doing the business post, we got a fresh batch of brand new Megaman X4 in.
